AA MUSEUM LAB designs a Nomadic Bookstore for Lars Müller Publishers at the Fuori Salone 2017 in Milan

Designed by the students of the AA Museum Lab, a Diploma unit of the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, the Nomadic Bookstore for Lars Müller Publishers is intended as a manifesto of the relevance of books in the context of the expansion of the digital.
Located in the heart of the Brera Design District in Milan, in Piazza San Marco, the Nomadic Bookstore presents a selection of Lars Müller Publisher’s books on Design, Architecture, Photography, Art and Society to the wide audience of the prestigious Salone del Mobile, which inaugurates on April 4th, 2017.
Conceived as an itinerant urban structure, the hovering LED-lit roof of the pavilion projects into the city ever changing provocative titles of Lars Müller’s books and shelters the publications within a soft interior-scape. Inside the pavilion, the predominant use of fine cork with diamond-pointed ashlar ceiling details, allows for a uniform exhibition book display and provides an acoustically subdued environment within hustle of the urban Milanese context. Intended as a prototype, in future incarnations the pavilion will transform itself at night by seamlessly morphing into a closed volume through the use of a pneumatic system.
The pavilion design was selected by an international jury from the competition entries of all eleven students of the AA Museum Lab. The winning proposal is the result of an intense collaboration between all students, who temporarily founded the AA Museum Lab office, simulating a “real” architecture practice.
The pavilion was built thanks to the support of Granorte, Dr. Gallina, Pro Helvetia, Vogt Landscape Ltd and the crowd-funding efforts of the students.

About the AA MUSEM LAB
The AA Museum Lab is a Diploma Unit (15) of the Architectural Association School of Architecture.
Led by Giulia Foscari, with Harikleia Karamali, and developed in collaboration with Ekaterina Golovatyuk, the course challenges Diploma students of the AA to develop, in parallel, a highly conceptual research and a design of a “live” project.
Through the individual research the students reflect on the paradoxes of contemporary museums and their current ideological, cultural, social, structural and technological transformations. Their thesis subjects include investigations on neglected regional cultural ambitions as well as typological critical analysis. The “live” project, on the other hand, consists of the design of a bookstore – seen as one of the prosaic programmatic components of the ever-growing museums. Taken outside the museum boundary, the Nomadic Bookstore aims to celebrate the analogue qualities of books.

AA MUSEUM LAB progetta un Nomadic Bookstore per Lars Müller Publishers al Fuori Salone 2017 a Milano

Progettato da studenti dell’ AA Museum Lab, un Diploma Unit dell’Architectural Association School of Architecture a Londra, il Nomadic Bookstore per Lars Müller Publishers è stato concepito come manifesto per enfatizzare la rilevanza dei libri nell’era di espansione digitale.
Situato al centro del Design District di Brera, in Piazza San Marco a Milano, il Nomadic Bookstore presenta ai numerosi visitatori del prestigioso Salone del Mobile, che verrà inaugurato il 4 aprile 2017, una selezione di libri pubblicati da Lars Müller Publishers su Design, Architettura, Fotografia, Arte e Società.
Concepito come struttura urbana itinerante, il tetto del padiglione – una volume “volante” rivestito di schermi LED – proietta nella citta’ una selezione di titoli provocatori della collezione di Lars Müller e racchiude i libri in un ambiente avvolgente. All’interno del padiglione, l’uso predominante di pannelli di sughero a grana fine – con soffitto bugnato a punta di diamante – garantisce una uniformita’ dello spazio espositivo e offre una insonorizzazione acustica che attenua il trambusto del contesto urbano milanese. Inteso come prototipo, in incarnazioni future, il padiglione si trasformera’ di notte – mediante un sistema telescopico testato dagli studenti – in un volume chiuso luminoso.
Il design del padiglione è stato selezionato tra le proposte degli undici studenti del corso AA Museum Lab da un giuria internazionale. Il padiglione realizzato è frutto di una intensa collaborazione tra gli studenti che hanno temporaneamente fondato l’AA Museum Lab Office, simulando uno studio professionale di architettura.
Il padiglione è stato costruito grazie al supporto di Granorte, Dott. Gallina, Pro Helvetia, Vogt Landscape Ltd e all’iniziativa di crowd-funding organizzata dagli studenti.

L’ AA Museum Lab è un Diploma Unit (15) della Architectural Association School of Architecture di Londra.
Diretto da Giulia Foscari, con assistenza di Harikleia Karamali, e in collaborazione con Ekaterina Golovatyuk, il corso offre agli studenti la possibilta’ di sviluppare, in parallelo, una tesi di ricerca e la progettazione un “live” project.
Attraverso il progetto di ricerca individuale gli studenti sono invitati a riflettere sui paradossi dei musei contemporanei e le loro trasformazioni ideologiche, culturali, sociali, strutturali e tecnologiche. Le tesi includono investigazioni che svelano l’amnesia di ambizioni culturali in regioni remote e analisi critiche di sviluppi tipologici. Il progetto, dall’altra parte, consiste nella realizzazione di una libreria d’arte, intesa come una delle componenti prosaiche dei musei in continua espansione. Estrapolato dai confini del museo, il Nomadic Bookstore vuole celebrare la qualità analogica dei libri.
