Art Spaces in the Era of Globalisation:
Between the Market and the Museum
My project explores the phenomenon of globalization of the contemporary art market, studying the correlation between the art fair, the commercial gallery and the auction house. I am investigating the implications the global market has had on the recent architectural development of these commercial models, looking at recent new architectural typologies, spatial contaminations and expansions. I have tried to obtain understanding of how these models have evolved to their present condition, looking at major shifts, events and protagonists, and drawing interconnections through parallel timelines in relation to a greater historical and economic context.
Following our unit agenda analysing the shifting role of the museum, I am also trying to look at the mutual and constant influence between the Museums and these commercial space types, which originally started off being subordinate to the museums, and have now evolved into its rivals, in terms of scale, visitors and quality of artwork.
